Riisitunturi National Park – A Masterpiece of Snow and Silence
Riisitunturi National Park is an easily accessible fell paradise, nestled in the heart of Southern Lapland’s slope bogs and ancient taiga forests. It is a place where nature’s artistry is on display year-round, offering some of the most iconic landscapes in all of Finland.
A Winter Wonderland of Sculpted Snow In winter, Riisitunturi transforms into a surreal dreamscape. The park is famous for its “crown snow” (tykkylumi), which encases the trees in heavy, white frost, turning them into magnificent natural sculptures of every imaginable shape. It is no wonder this is one of Finland’s most popular destinations for snowshoeing and photography.
Summer Magic and Blue Horizons When the snow melts, the fell comes alive with the swaying white heads of cotton grass (tupasvilla) in the slope bogs. You might hear the melancholic call of the European golden plover as you hike across the moorland. The summit rewards you with breathtaking panoramas stretching over Lake Kitkajärvi all the way to the distant blue fells of Kuusamo.
