Korouoma – An Ancient Wonder of the North
Korouoma Canyon: A Journey to the Deep Wild Just a short drive away lies one of Finland’s most dramatic natural wonders. Korouoma is a massive 30-kilometer-long fracture valley, famous for its towering cliffs and world-class ice falls. Whether you’re hiking the legendary trails in the summer or marveling at the frozen blue walls in winter, Korouoma is a must-visit for every true explorer.
Located about an hour’s drive from Ranua, Korouoma is a geological masterpiece. This canyon valley was formed millions of years ago, and today it offers some of the most rugged and breathtaking scenery in Lapland. It is a place of extremes: sheer rock faces, lush valley floors, and a silence that speaks volumes.
❄️ Winter: The Kingdom of Ice
In winter, Korouoma transforms into a world-famous destination for ice climbing and winter hiking.
Frozen Waterfalls: The canyon is home to massive ice falls that freeze into stunning shades of turquoise and deep blue. The most famous ones—Jääputous, Ruskea virta, and Mammutti—are sights you will never forget.
The Koronjää Trail: This 5-kilometer circular trail is the best way to see the main ice falls. It’s a steep hike but well-maintained, offering incredible photography spots at every turn.
Winter Wonderland: Even if you aren’t a climber, walking through the valley under heavy snow-covered trees feels like stepping into a Narnia-like fantasy world.
☀️ Summer: The Rugged Ravine
When the ice melts, Korouoma reveals a lush, green landscape with unique flora and fauna.
Hiking & Trekking: The trails offer varying levels of difficulty. You can hike along the rim for epic views over the canyon or descend into the valley to walk alongside the Korojoki river.
Rare Nature: Keep your eyes peeled! The microclimate in the canyon allows rare plants to thrive, and it is a prime spot for birdwatching—golden eagles are known to soar above the cliffs.
Photography & Picnics: There are several campfire sites (laavu) along the trails. There is nothing quite like grilling a sausage over an open fire while surrounded by 100-meter-high rock walls
Pro Tip: Wear sturdy hiking boots. The terrain is steep and can be slippery regardless of the season. If you’re heading there in winter, we recommend grabbing a pair of crampons (liukuesteet) for your boots from The Gear Shed.
